About Gastineau Guiding

At Gastineau Guiding Company, we love the nature of Southeast Alaska. Being outdoors and sharing our home with people is what brings us joy. Watching humpback whales on a daily basis, seeing the Mendenhall Glacier slowly retreat up the valley, or seeing the patterns of spring, summer and fall on the trail; our guides appreciate the many insights and lessons offered by mother nature.

Gastineau Guiding was established in 1994 in Juneau, Alaska, and remains locally owned and operated by founders Bob Janes and Dawn Wolfe. We operate tours exclusively here in our hometown of Juneau, Alaska. Our very first interpretive tour was operated on Douglas Island, and was named the Douglas Island Nature Hike. What started then as a staff of 10, has now grown to a staff of over 100. And over the years the tours have evolved to now include wildlife viewing trips by land & sea, like our Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier Photo Safari.

Yet through all the changes, Gastineau Guiding remains true to its roots, offering small-group, fully-guided wilderness tours for active cruise ship travelers. The feedback we receive from our guests drives us to produce what we believe to be the best Shore Excursion experiences in Alaska. Our local paper, the Juneau Empire, has named us as the “Best Local Guiding Company”, and we have garnered “Tour Guide of the Season” Or “Shore Excursion of the Season” awards from cruise ship passengers nearly every year of our existence. When you Step Into Alaska with a Gastineau Guide, our purpose is to leave you with a sense of wonder about the place we call home.
